Home
Finished work and back home for last minute packing. At six o'clock Mike and Steph came round and we all drove to Heathrow.
Checking in at the Premier Inn Bath Road we got a table for dinner and ordered. When our starters arrived we realised the cheese garlic bread that three of us had ordered was from the "Tear and Share" section. We had a large pizza sized cheese garlic bread each. We took so long eating the starter we were only half way through when the waiter arrived with our mains. They had to go back until we could finish the starter. We had a nice meal and a chat until it was time for Steph and Mike to take the Disco and drive home. With very full tummies we hiked the long walk back to our room. It feels like our room is in Slough as it is so far from the lift. Back in our room we settled down for a good nights sleep.

Saturday 7th December 2013
Premier Inn Bath Road, Heathrow
We woke at five o'clock well rested and hiked down for breakfast, taking our bags with us to save returning. After a nice continental breakfast we checked out and jumped the Hotel Hopper to Terminal 3. Singapore Airlines check-in was quiet so we got through quickly and queued for security. Martin's bag was shunted aside for a more thorough search due to all the cables and batteries. Watching the people before us we expected to be there for ever going through all the tech stuff. We were pleasantly supprised when we found they were only interested in one item. So into the departure lounge with an hour to spare for relaxation , feet up for Martin and retail therapy for Jackie.
While we were watching the flight information board a couple of flights changed to "delayed" and "canceled" and ours went to "Please wait". Shortly after we were called to our gate. As we arrived we were told there was an air traffic control delay and our departure would be delayed five hours until 4pm. The TV news was all about the delays caused by the Air Traffic Control Center at Swannick Farm having problems that were causing delays at all UK airports. After waiting for a while the delay was reduced and we boarded our Airbus A380 and departed Heathrow at just after 12 o'clock, only an hour late.
The economy seating on the upper deck was very comfortable. With only two seats by the window we didn't have to sit next to Mr BO or Mrs Halitosis. After sitting for twelve hours we landed at Singapore. When we got off the aircraft we only had 15 minutes to make our connection to Perth. As we walked through the airport the first sign we saw for the gate for our flight stated thst it was an 18min to walk to the gate. So we had to tab across the terminal. (British army slang for a forced march / run carrying full equipment ) We made it to the gate as they were boarding our row. We sat down and within minutes the aircraft was pushed back and we were off again.
Five hours later we landed at Perth. With our new passports we decided to use the automatic gates. Jackie breezed through altough having to take her glasses off made reading the instructions difficult. Arch criminal Martin was shunted to the assistance desk for vetting to see if he was allowed into Australia. Eventually it was decided that a drunk and disorderly charge nearly fourty years ago wouldn't prevent him from entering Australia. Our cases arived and after getting through bio-security we jumped a cab to the camper hire.
Having completed the paperwork we drove to our pre-booked hotel for the night. After a shower we found a take away for our evening meal as we didn't want much as we have spent the last 18 hours eating on the plane. Then it was back to the room for an early night.

Monday 9th December 2013
Perth WA
Waking this morning refreshed we left the hotel and drove to a local shopping mall. We found some items for the camper and joined the queue at checkout, just us then. When the assistant had scanned and packed our goods (We had forgotten they do that here in Oz) it was time to pay. Martin put his card in the machine and then had the next reminder of how different it is, question time :-
"What account - Cheque, Savings or Credit ?".
Eerrrrr. Press Cheque......"Declined"
oh bugger press "Savings"..... "Declined".
If we keep this our card will get blocked lets pay with cash. We get out of the shop and now need cash so we go to an ATM. Oh no same question, oh well we haven't tried
"Credit"...."Approved".
Thank goodness for that. Note to self a debit card is "credit". Back in the camper we decide to drive south to visit family in Port Bouvard. Driving past Perth city centre we decided to drive up to Kings Park which has a beautiful view over Perth city centre and the Swan River. With the sun shining and a nice cool breeze we enjoyed the view and snapped some photographs. Returning to the camper we continued south. After only 200 km the fuel warning light came on but the fuel guage was still showing full. Fortunately we were not far from a petrol station so could fill the tank and find out which indication was correct. Unfortunately the diesel pump nozzle did not fit in the fuel tank. So we drove to another petrol station and got the same result. We will have to contact the hire company about this but not today. Arriving at our relatives we sat on the veranda looking out over the inlet drinking wine and chatted until bed time.

Tuesday 10th December 2013
Port Bouvard WA
We were woken up at four o'clock this morning by the sun shining into the bedroom and a kookaburra laughing in the tree outside. Up and out this morning we are going sight seeing with our relatives. Driving south towards Bunbury we turned off of the main road and headded inland. After twenty minutes we came over the brow of a hill to a roundabout and there at the side of the road thousands of gnomes. Welcome to Gnomeville ! Gnomes everywhere in bushes, up trees, in houses, buses , cars. Hang gliding gnomes, hockey gnomes, football gnomes. It seemed endless. Then the supprise Don and Fran had got us Martin and Jackie gnomes for us to leave. We spent a while deciding where to leave ourselves. In the end we found a nice spot near a fallen tree. Placing our gnomeselves we took a few photographs and left.
Driving into Bunbury we stopped for lunch at a nice pub by the estrury. Then back to the housefor an afternoon siesta. At five o'clock we drove into Mandurah for the christmas pagaent and firework display. The floats in the parade were all brilliant and you could see the work that had gone in to them. After the parade we had a picnic of chicken and salad and then waited for the fireworks to start. They were quite spetacular especially the ones that dropped straight back onto the floor. We were glad they had the bush fire brigade on standby. After the display was over we returned to the car and drove back to the house and bed.

Wednesday 11th December 2013
Port Bouvard WA
After a huge breakfast we left Don and Frans and drove to a local shopping centre. Having parked we called the help line for the camper and they found a garage up the road who would fix the warning light. While we were waiting we shopped for the latest "Camps Australia" book. The garage replaced the filter but could not help with the fuel filler problem. So we decided to drive back into Perth and get Apollo Campers to sort it out. Having explained the problem again the mechanic looked at it and he knew we were right. He told us to have a sit down and a cold drink while they sort out the problem. We listened to them as three of them discussed the problem. "Should we drill it out", "No mate we need to split it". There followed the sound of banging and thumping.
Shortly after the camper was returned with the obstruction to the filler pipe removed. We drove out of town to find a camp site for the night. Having found a spot and set up the bed we drove up to Jarrahdale to visit friends. After a good evening chatting over a bbq we returned to our campsite. Driving in the dark we travelled slowly and avoided the kangeroos that jumped out onto the road. The camper isn't equiped with a roobar so we have to be careful at night. Back at our campsite we settled down for a well earned rest.

Thursday 12th December 2013
Jarrahdale WA
With the sun waking us at five o'clock, we had eaten breakfast (Weetbix and Rasin Toast) by seven, so we drove into Armadale for some shopping. As the shops were not open yet we dropped into McD for a coffee. After coffee we shopped for some last minute items including fresh foods for our trip. Then on the way out of town we filled the campers fuel tank and also the two 20 litre jerrycans. Heading east we climbed the hills out of Perth. We planed a shortish drive today with a lunch stop half way. We picked rolls up from a delli in a little village along the way. Dodging a Hemu and his chicks we made good time. Arriving at our night stop we set up camp. After a couple of hours we realised that the shade from our awning was dissapearing so we turned the camper around and relaxed in the shade. When the sun set and the flies dissapeared we cooked dinner and ate listening to the circadas. With the temperature cooling it was time for a bush strip wash and then watch the stars come out before bed.

Friday 13th December 2013
Gorge Rock WA
Waking up to another beautiful day we packed up and having checked our camp site to be sure we have left only footprints we drove out. Starting up the satnav it insisted we had four hundred kilometers to drive today and it would take eleven hours to get there. Having forced it to take the direct route it now showed a twelve hour drive. How rough are these roads going to be? We are planning to use dirt roads today but do not expect to take that long. Driving east we arrived at Hyden (location of Wave Rock). We were here in 1994 and parked near the rock and wandered around. Now you have to pay to park in the carpark and pay to visit the rock. Don't think we will bother it can't have changed that much. Stopping only to top up with fuel and food we drove out of town.
Just out of town the main road turned south so we swung off and continued east down a dirt road. After only four hours we arrived at our next camp site. We arrived at Lake Johnston and carefuly figured out the right direction to point the camper to get the best of the afternoon shade from our sun awning. Having got ourselves organised we decided as this looks like a quiet camp we will shower tonight. Filling the solar shower we placed it in the sun to warm. After two hours we thought we had better bring it in as we have nearly been scalded before by a solar shower left out too long. Martin walked out of the shade to fetch it and came dancing back very quickly. The sand is red hot, it is probably cooler doing a bare foot fire walk. lol. Lake Johnston is a salt lake and our camp is right on the shore so we have a spectacular view. We hear the wind blowing across the lake a minute before it arrives to cool us down.
Tea and cake at three o'clock how civilised. The best part of the day, looking out over a salt lake watching the mirages shimmering with a cup of tea in one hand and a slice of banana cake in the other. The temperature is in the high thirties but should start to cool down soon. Time for a walk down to the lake before dinner.

Satuday 14th December 2013
Lake Johnston WA
After a good nights sleep following a refreshing bush shower we started at a leasurly pace. Waking at six o'clock the sun was well up and the flies were up and about to. So we prepared breakfast outside but ate inside the camper. While we ate breakfast we chatted about the trip and what we would like to do and see. Number one on Jackie's wish list was to see a Thorny Devil in the wild, we have only ever seen them in wildlife parks. Looking around Martins only commrnt was that we would have to be very lucky to find anything in this landscape. After washing up and breaking camp we drove the last 100km to Norseman. On the way at 100 kph on a dirt road something caught our eyes an we stopped in a cloud of dust. Pulling a quick 'U'ie we drove slowly back to find a Thorny Devil staring at us. So we got a few photographs and a video of him walking away.
Having stocked up in Norsemsn and driving south towards Esperance we were looking for a track that cut off a corner of the highway. We found the turn off of the main road but after a few kilometers the track became thirty tracks and we had no way of knowing which the correct one was. So after half an hour of driving up and down various tracks we gave up and returned to Norseman to ask in the Information Center. "Don't, there are no maps" was the advice. So we gave it up and took the main road, there will be plenty more dirt roads in the next two weeks. We arrived at "90 mile straight" and stopped for a photo. This is the longest straight road in Australia. An hour and a half later nearing the end, we tested the steering and brakes to ensure that they hadn't siezed up through lack of use. Then we came across a road sign informing us that we were now in the Central Australia time zone and should set our watches 45 min forwards. We decided to wait as we seem to remember that after the South Australia border we have to change times again. After a six hour drive we pulled into our camp site for the night. With remarkably few flies we had an early dinner and a relaxing evening listening to the cicardas and watching the sunset.

Sunday 15th December 2013
Moonera Tank WA
Starting out on another long days drive, planning a six hour day today. Heading east we dropped off of the escarpment and ran along under the cliff for several hours befor climbing the cliff again at Eucla. Stopping in the road house for fuel and the loos we were supprised to see Santa's helpers fixing a new roof over the petrol pumps. Well anyway the roofers were all wearing either santa top t-shirts or elf tops. While Martin was paying for the fuel a female police officer joked with Jackie about being left behind and how they would chase Martin down. Noticing that the roadhouse did proper coffee we stayed for a cup, very nice!
Along the road were quite a few roadkill roos with either crows or wedgetailed eagles eating. As we aproached each time the birds would take-off and fly away before circling to land behind us. One wedgetail had obviously eaten a lot because his take-off was very slow and we only just missed hitting him by breaking hard. Think he needs to re-evaluate his take-off performance lol.
We decided to head north off of the main road to Koondala Roadhouse. This is an old roadhouse beside the old highway. The highway was moved south to run beside the cliffs of the southern bight when the road was tarmaced. We camped here on our tour of Australia in 2005. The only changes we noticed are that you have to pay to camp here now, when we stayed it was free. They have also removed the deralict sheering shed that was unsafe. Having eaten lunch watched by a kestrel, we set off again and rather than returning to the highway we drove along the track of the old road. The track was cut by washes occasionaly and in a couple of cases we only spotted them late which meant we hit them too fast and got some air. At the Nularbor Roadhouse where the old road joins the new we got back on the tarmac. Driving on we arrived at our camp site to find we had it to ourselves and the camper was still attached to the vehicle. When we checked the time we found we had to move our clocks forward by two and a half hours. Then the usual cooking dinner (crockery all still intact) and relaxing til bed time. This camp site is very dusty so feet will be washed before bed.

Monday 16th December 2013
Colona Rest Area SA
With the clock change our normal wake up with the sun feels like a lay in even if it's not. Getting on the road eastwards again we were a little short of diesel. Not a major problem as we have 40 litres in two jerrycans if we need it. With 70km to the next roadhouse the fuel warning light came on so it was time for fuel saving mode. Driving along at 90 kph seemed very slow but if we run out of fuel we have to fill from the jerrycans and bleed the system. With five kilometers to go and the fuel needle fixed on empty we rolled into the fruit fly check point. The question was what wastes the least fuel :-
1) Stopping the engine and restarting after the check.
2) Allowing the engine to idle while we are being checked.
We decided to let it tick over, fortunately the inspection was quick and we rolled the last five kilometers and stopped on the diesel pump. Filling up took 71 litres so we may have had 4 ltr left in the tank. With fuel again we shopped before heading out. Instead of taking the main road we turned off and headed north into the Gawler Range. On this dirt road we found humps across the road. The first one caught us by suprise and we achieved take-off. Knowing what to look for we managed to slow down for the rest. We were constantly adjusting our speed due to cattle grids, floodways, streams and sheep. At one point a large male grey kangeroo who was sleeping under a bush by the road decided he didn't like his bush anymore and jumped out into the road. We were able to avoid hitting him and he hopped off to find another bush without the traffic.
The Gawler Range is picturesque and the drive a challenge but it was time to head for our stop for the night. We arrived in Kimba and pulled into the camp site we have used before. It is OK but a little noisy due to the level crossing right next to it. Last time we had trains and trucks all night. We found a map that showed where there was additional free camping at the local memorial park. We moved there for the night to find a brand new shower. Only one dollar for a three minute shower. Both showered and re-coated with mozzie and fly repelent, we settled in for a relaxing evening with the galahs squarking in the trees around us.

Tuesday 17th December 2013
Kimba Memorial Ground SA
Having pitched camp beside a large leafy gum tree it wasn't the sun that woke us this morning it was a flock of about fifty galahs chirping in the tree beside us at sunrise. Never mind, weetbix and rasin toast for breaky. The rasin toast cooked better after a Martin modification to the camp stove toaster. Having packed we drove out of town only stopping for a few photograps by the "Halfway Across" sign. Kimba is the half way point between Perth and Sydney. A gentle two hour drive saw us in Port Augusta. We dropped in at the Tourist Information Centre to complete what has become a TalbotTour ritual. Every time we pass we have an "Outback Burger". This was our sixth time through as both the roads between Sydney & Perth and Adelaide & Alice Springs pass through Port Augusta. Having eaten we found a caravan park and booked into a powered site. Time to charge all our electrical items (cameras, computer and video). With the computer charged we can empty the memory cards of the cameras and back up all the photos. While doing that we hit the laundry and washed everything except our swimming costumes. We spent the time waiting for the laundry cooling down in tbe pool. The temperature today was 35°C so a soak in the pool was a relief. With all the housework done it was cheese and biscuits at dusk under a full moon. Oh important point, with power from the camp site the air conditioning works. So a cool evening chilling out before bed.

Wednesday 18th December 2013
Port Augusta SA
If we thought Kimba was noisy Port Augusta wasn't much better. All through the night we could hear the trains shunting and wagons being hitched and unhitched. It wasn't enough to keep us awake just disturb our sleep pattern. After breakfast we drove to McD's to use thier free internet and upload some pictures over a coffee. Then we drove towards Adelaide checking out a couple of camp sites on the way. We were visiting friends and expected to arrive at the camp site late, so knowing the layout would be and advantage.
At four o'clock we arrived at Scott and Vesna's house and were made welcome as always. Olly and Julie soon turned up and we chatted before going out for dinner. After dinner and back at Vesna's we were persuaded to stay the night, so the camp info was not nedded. After a fun evening it was time for bed in a real bed for the first time for a week.

Thursday 19th December 2013
Elizabeth SA
Scott and Vesna were up and gone to work at six. It felt strange getting up in someone else's house but we were soon ready and let ourselves out locking the door behind us. Driving through Adelaide and off towards Mount Barker we stopped for fuel. Having topped up Martin went to pay and mixed up the pump numbers. Only when he got back to the camper did he realise he had paid for the wrong pump. Fortunately there was only five dollars difference between the pumps so it was easilly sorted.
On our way again we stopped at ten and phoned the caravan site in Emu Plains where we planned to spend xmas. Unfortunately they had no powered pitches left. The good news they have pitches that are hard to get to and we got the last one as we have a 4wd camper. So we are set for xmas.
Driving on we stopped for lunch in a nice shady rest area. After lunch the temperature got up to the forties and the roads started melting. We got pebble-dashed by passing trucks and it felt like we were driving through toffee but we eventually pulled off of the main road onto a track and 15km later arrived at a nice shaded quiet camp site in the forrest. Setting up camp and making a cup of tea took no time and soon we were relaxing in the shade of our awning. We wonder what will visit tonight or wake us up in the morning

Friday 20th December 2013
Surrey Ridge Camp, Cobboboonee Forrest VIC
Last night we were visited by a couple of walabies who hid in the bush and then bounced across the camp ground into the bush the other side. The as the sun was setting we heard a crackling in the bush and a koala started climbing one of the trees by our camper. He stopped halfway up for a rest and to glare at us for daring to camp.under his favorite tree. Contintinuing to the top be settled down to a dinner of eucalyptus leaves.
This morning we were woke at sunrise by a pair of Cacatua Galerita (The Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Arthur) screaming at each other in one of the trees. They were only silenced by the Kookabura laughing in the next tree. Keith the Koala was sleeping off his eucalyptus binge and didn't want to even look at us, so we left him sleeping / sulking and set off again.
After coffee in Warnambool we started driving the Great Ocean Road. This took quite some time as there is a view point every two kilometers. Having seen and photographed The Twelve/Eleven/err Ten Appostles, London Bridge and other sights we arrived at Apollo Bay and turned off towards Johanna Beach camp site. Finding a good pitch we set up camp and then went for a walk on the beach. Enjoying the cool sea breeze and warm sand we checked out the rock pools. Looking at but NOT touching the Puffer Fish and watching out for the blue ringed octopus, we got back to our camp with all hands and feet the same size and colour as when we left. Watching the Blue Headed Wrens and Wily Wagtails flitting about, we settled down for another evening. We will sleep well tonight with the sea breeze and the sound of the waves breaking on the beach.

Saturday 21th December 2013
Johanna Beach VIC
Well it rained all night last night and we woke to a temperature of 15°C this morning. As we cook outside we decided to skip breakfast, break camp and get away from the coast to where it was warmer and drier. Arriving in the first large town we stopped for a breakfast of coffee and raisin toast. Driving on we grabbed lunch sandwiches from a roadhouse and stopped later to eat them. While we ate we watched the people from other vehicles eating thier lunches flapping hands and bits of gum tree to keep the flies off. Funny thing they didn't bother us, good old "Desert Dwellers" (aboriginal recipie in moisurising cream- the flies can't stand it).
Finishing lunch we drove on to our stop for the night. Fifty kilometers from the main road down tracks. Setting up camp took less than 30 minutes from turning into the camp site to sitting in the shade of the awning sipping tea and eating a slice of fruit cake. We hung our bedding out to dry as the camper had leaked slightly this morning and within the hour it was all dry and back on the bed ready for tonight. The temperature this afternoon is 40°C making a twenty five degree rise since this morning. Pheew wot a scortcher. So an afternoon of quiet relaxation is called for, listening to the circadas and waiting to see who or what drops in to visit.

Sunday 22nd December 2013
Forest Camp, Warby-Ovens NP.
Wangarata VIC.
Early start this morning as we need to be in Sydney Monday afternoon. Our plan was to drive six hundred of the seven hundred kilometers today and spend the last free camping night in the Megalong Vally which is in the Blue mountains just outside Sydney. It's a public holiday and it's "Double Demerits" for all driving offences in Australia during holidays. So we took our time and were waved at by a few policemen as we were well inside the speed limit when they checked us.
After shopping and taking a couple of safety breaks we arrived in Bathurst NSW home of The Mount Panorama racing circuit. Driving the camper the lap times won't up to much, oh and the sixty kph speed limit will not help either. Still we managed an overtake in the braking zone for Forest Elbow, you just got to smile. Finally rolling into Blackheath we turned off the main road and started the twisting descent into the valley.
At the camp site we set up camp, balancing the campers front left wheel on a convenient rock to even out the slope of the ground. The circadas here are very loud, hopefully they will quieten down at sunset or sleeping will be difficult. Driving to the camp we passed the Megalong Tea Rooms, we may have to stop there on the way out. We have had tea and scones there every time we have visited the Blue Mountains.
Oh dear we had a visit from the CFS (Country Fire Servive), as of midnight there is a total fire ban and we are not allowed to use our outside gas cooker. Oh no, looks like it's breakfast in the Megalong Tea Rooms for us then.

Monday 23rd December 2013
Old Ford Campground.
Megalong Valley NSW.
So with a total fire ban in place we woke and left the camp site to take a walk down to the river before driving to the tea rooms for a full country breakfast. We ate outside with only a couple of flies for company. We are used to that by now and the skill of waving the knife or fork not in use over the food to discorage the flies is automatic. Having cleared our plates we left and drove back up the valley to the main road.
On our way into town we stopped at Echo Point and the Three Sisters for a photo shoot. Then dropping down the main road out of the Blue Mountains we arrived in Penrith. After a visit to the Mall we checked our shipping company to find they close tomorrow afternoon for the xmas holidays and don't open until Janurary the second. So we collected a box, bubble wrap and wide parcel tape and then drove out to the caravan park.
At the caravan park we checked in. When we had booked ahead by phone there had been no powered pitches available, so we had a small pitch right out the back. Talking to the owner Jackie casually asked if they had had any cancelations. Luckily they had so we now have a powered pitch, all our electrical equipment is on charge and the aircon is running.
We sorted out and boxed up the kit we do not need on the next part of our tour, ready to take to the shipping company in the morning. Then we hit the showers and laundry. Nice and clean we relaxed outside the camper till night.

Staying in the Holiday Village whilst visiting family in Penrith. Powered pitch, air conditioning, swimming pool, communal BBQ area, laundry, hot showers and a shop it's almost like being in a hotel.

Day out in Sydney today. The walk to Emu Plains Railway Station only took a few minutes. Having failed with the automatic ticket machine we found a member of staff in the ticket office and for only A$22 each we got an all day ticket. Boarding the train we settled down upstairs for the hour trip into the city centre. After only two stops, we were off the train due to engineering works. Boarding a replacement bus we finished the trip arriving in town close to Circular Quay. Walking down to the quay we found a cruise ship docked and the area swarming with passengers from the ship. Walking around to the Opera House we sat and enjoyed a coffee and a danish. Having taken a few photographs we returned to Circular Quay and jumped a ferry to Darling Harbour. As we steamed along Martins hat blew off and we expected to see it floating away behind the boat. With no sign of the hat in the water, we finally spotted it hanging on the back of the boat right down by the water. Making our way back to the stern we waited until the ferry docked and with Jackie holding our phones and wallets, Martin climbed over the railing and rescued his hat.
Walking around Paddy's Market we picked up a few bargains before finding lunch. Walking back to the ferry stop we caught the Rivercat up the river to Paramatta. The ferry was packed already and there was only space for twenty we were about the fifteenth and sixteenth on board. As we left there were a lot of sad people left waiting for the next ferry. We had to stand outside, so we watched the scenery pass by. After a few stops as people got off we found a seat. After a few more stops, as we were getting hot we finally moved inside. Arriving at Paramatta we walked to the railway station and caught a train back to Emu Plains. Arriving back at our camper at seven o'clock. Time to soak our tired feet before cheese and biscuits and bed.

Last visits with family and saying goodbye until next time.

Moving on time. Packing up this morning for the last time in the camper. Checking out from the camp site we drove into the city and out to Bondi Beach. The wind was quite strong and we got sandblasted as we walked down to the water for a quick paddle. It wouldn't have been much fun swimming as the waves were large. Having taken some pics we sat outside a cafe on Bondi Beach with a coffee and a bowl of wedges with sour cream and chili sauce.
Driving south we found a motel at Maroubra which was within 20 mins drive of the airport. Dragging all our luggage up to the room, we repacked for the next leg of our adventure. Then we went down to the beach where we found a very nice restaurant right on the beachfront with a panoramic view. Sitting in the shade and enjoying the sea breeze we had a supurb last dinner in Australia. After dinner we walked along the front before returning to our room for the night.

Monday 30th December 2013
Maroubra NSW
Leaving the hotel early we drove the camper to the return depot and handed it back with heavy hearts. That part of our holiday is now officially over. We have driven 5500 kilometers and seen some fabulous sights and camped in some lovely spots.
Taking a taxi to the airport we joined the queue for check-in. After two hours we finally got through security and at eleven o'clock, managed to get breakfast. Unfortunately as it had taken so long to get through we only had time for a coffee and a sandwich rather than the cooked breakfast we had been planning.
The first flight was a short one and we arrived in Fiji after three and a half hours. With a transit waiting time of three hours and a two hour time change we left Fiji again at nine pm local time, flying into yesterday. Then came the International Date Line magic. We landed at Los Angeles International Airport at 10:30 the morning we left. Eleven and a half hours before we left Fiji and two hours before we departed from Sydney.
Getting through immigration and customs we found the hire car shuttle bus. It took twenty minutes just to get out of the terminals. At the collection point we found our hire car and drove to our hotel in Hollywood. Parking the car we walked along Hollywood Boulevard looking at all the Stars "Stars" in the pavement and stopped in at Manns Chineese Theatre to look at the hand and foot prints.
Back at the hotel we could now check in and unload our cases from the car. As it was still early we decided to drive in to Venice Beach. We managed a few photos before driving out on the Pacific Highway to watch the sunset. Last night we had sat on the East coast of Australia looking out across tbe Pacific and this afternoon we were sat on the West coast of America looking back across the Pacific Ocean to where we left this morning.
Returning to Hollywood we walked down Hollywood Boulevard looking for somewhere to eat and decided on The Hard Rock Cafe. We only had to wait for fifteen minutes for a table and as soon as we sat down we ordered drinks. The drinks arrived diet coke for Martin but Jackies white wine was delayed because the bar was very busy and she was given a glass of water to start. Her white wine arrived a couple of minutes later and as she sipped it our server arrived with another that had been poured by mistake. Would Jackie like it for free?
What a stupid question. Of course she does!
So we had a delicious meal for less than we expected fo pay. With full tummies we wandered back to the hotel and bed. That set a record for our longest day. Up at six in Australia, bed at nine in Hollywood is 15 hours plus 18 hours of time travel.

Tuesday 31st December 2013
Hollywood CA USA.
Breakfast this morning was strange as there isn't a breakfast room. The coffee and doughnuts are placed in reception which is about three metres by three metres. You pour your coffee select your doughnut and then walk out into the carpark to find somewhere to eat it. We took ours back to our room although most people were standing in the carpark.
Driving out of LA we stopped at a mall to get a SIM card for Martin's phone. Then out onto the freeway and heading the four hours to Las Vegas. We came off of the freeway and we were right by our hotel. As traffic was very heavy we drove straight into the carpark and into a parking spot just vacated by a departing guest. We had been lucky as the garage was full and whilst we were getting our kit out of the car four people stopped and asked us if we were leaving.
Walking into the MGM Grand Hotel was amazing, all marble floors and a Huge Golden Lion in the centre of the lobby. Joining the queue we only had to wait about twenty minutes to get checked in. We were room 220 on the 16 th floor of the Grand Tower. With 5000 rooms we must remember which one is ours or it would take a long tie to find our cases.
Taking the correct lift that stops at our floor we got to our room. After a quick change we wemt for a walk around the hotel. This took longer than we thought as the hotel is gigantic. It took us about twenty minutes to walk from the lobby to the exit out onto the strip. Finding the ticket desk for the Cirque de Solil "Ka" we collected our tickets and then got dinner in the Rainforest Resteraunt.
At eight o'clock we found our seats in the theatre and settled down for the show. It was a very good show with the stage platforms moving and tilting. Sometimes members of the cast would appear in amongst the audience and jump onto the stage. Others would fall or jump off the stage and dissapear out of view.
Getting out of the show at ten o'clock we spent some time gambling in the casino. At eleven o'clock we made our way out of the hotel onto the strip and wandered down the closed road with all the other new year revelers, looking at the thousands of neon lights and listening to the live music.
At midnight the fireworks started, we could see fireworks comming from the top of three hotels around us. Then it was time to stroll back to the hotel and bed after another long day.

Wednesday 1st January 2014
Las Vegas NV USA.
Walking through the casino to get breakfast there were still people playing the slots and wheels. There were also several poker games still running. Having eaten we went for a walk up the strip dropping into casinos as we passed.
At the Venecian we stopped for a coffee and watched the pretend gondalas motoring around the canals. We got to the Bellagio for the fountain display in time for one of the shows and with the lagoon in shadow but the sun shining in the fountains the show was spectacular.
Having walked about four miles and with sore feet we grabbed diner and retired for an earlyish night.

Thursday 2nd January 2014
Las Vegas NV USA.
Checking out from the MGM Grand this morning, we drove out of Vegas and headed into Arizona. On the border brtween Arizona and Nevada was the Hoover Dam. So we dropped off of the freeway and followed the old road that crossed the river on the dam. Stopping for a look around and a couple of photos we were soon on our way again. Driving over the new bridge that by-passes the dam we continued on. Having driven for three hours we stopped in Williams, which is a little town on the old Route 66. Checking into a motel for two nights we caught up with the laundry and other house keeping chores.
With snow on the ground we changed out of our shorts into jeans for the trip out for dinner.

Friday 3rd January 2014
Williams AZ USA.
After breakfast we drove north to the South Rim of The Grand Canyon. Having marvled at the view from the first lookout we dropped in to the trading post for a little shopping. Driving out of Grand Canyon Village we happened across a group of Elk crossing the road. We had seen signs warning of wildlife crossing but there is no garantee that you will see anything.
The local driving behind us got all stressy and beeped his horn because we were waiting for the elk to cross the road and taking photos. He obviously was in a hurry to polish his banjo or something just as important.
Driving along the rim we stopped at lots of view points and took hundreds of photos before dropping south to Flagstaff then along the interstate back to Williams for the second night.

Saturday 4th January 2014
Williams AZ USA.
Packing up, it was time to move on again. As it was a six and a half hour drive back to Long Beach we decided to head back in that direction and stop short of the Los Angeles area. We ended up at a town called Hesperia and checked into a motel for the night. With only and hour and a half left to drive tomorrow we had a nice dinner at Applebees and a relaxing evening re-packing for the next leg of our holiday.

Our cruise route.

Sunday 5th January 2014
Hesperia CA USA.
Waking up today it is embarkation day for our cruise. After breakfast we checked out and drove into Los Angeles. The roads were busy but not as crowded as it would have been on a working day. Arriving at Long Beach we found the car hire return office and as we had plenty of time decided to get a cofee before returning the car. Stopping at a typicle American diner and ordering two coffees we were given mugs that were topped up every time the waitress went past. Martin also ordered the pancakes. Fortunately we could share as the "Short Stack" was massive.
We returned to the car hire depot and parked in one of the bays. A man said that we could give the car keys to him. Unfortunately as he wasn't in a uniform or displaying anything that identified him a an employee of the hire company we were a little hesitant about just handing the keys over. Having proved he worked for the hire company we left the key and caught a taxi to the cruise port.
Arriving at the port we handed our cases over to a porter and went and checked in. With our cruise cards we were called forward to board. After the usual secutity checks we were on board and photographed for security and as a memento of the occasion.
Finding our cabin we decided to do the treasure hunt that required us to get a card stamped in various locations around the ship. Returning to our cabin our first case had arrived and we started un-packing.
Then the ships alarm sounded and we had to assemble at our emergency muster point with our lifejackets. With this formality over we returned to complete the unpacking as our second case had arrived. Having packed this case four weeks ago and not opened it since, we were supprised to find out what we had packed.
Having hung all our clothes up to allow the creases to drop out it was time to set sail. Our room steward arrived with two glasses of champagne and we stood on our balcony sipping our drinks as we sailed from Long Beach as the sun set. Later we changed and went for dinner as our dining room has a dress code in the evening. The food was of a very high standard and the service was excellent. We were sat at a table with two other couples and chatted while we ate. Drinking coffee we decided to catch the evenings show in the theater. After advancing our clocks one hour we retired for the night worn out after another long day.

Monday 6th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
We must have been tired as we only woke at eight o'clock and by the time we had showered and dressed it was about nine. Not that it mattered as breakfast doesn't end until eleven in the Horizon Restaurant. We explored the ship and found the shops, so stopped in for a browse and picked up some items. We then checked out the sale in one of the lounges (everything under $10).
After lunch on the Lido Deck we joined the crowd for the draw for prizes in the treasure hunt. We were not lucky this time and decided to split up for the afternoon. Jackie took part in the Pictionary competition and came second, winning a prize before taking part in the trivia quiz. Meanwhile Martin attended an astronomy lecture, which proved to be the first of eight. Back together it was time to get cleaned up for the evenings formal "Captain's Welcome Aboard Party".
All spruced up in our best evening dress, we posed for photographs and then watched the pouring of the champagne waterfall. Whilst sipping our champagne we joined the queue for dinner. After a while we found we were queueing for the wrong resteraunt. Ooops silly us, so we went down to the next floor and joined the correct queue. While we were waiting a waiter re-filled our glasses. When we got to the front of the queue we were sent back upstairs to the first restaurant as ours was full.
Sitting down to another fabulous meal we finally returned to our mini-suite for the night, tired and full.

Tuesday 7th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
A lazy start today. As we were leaving our cabin our steward (Jon) shouted good morning the lenght of the passageway. He seems to be there 24/7 and we cannot leave or arrive without being spotted. It's nice as he is always cheerful and wants to chat. Martin wandered off for his daily lecture and Jackie for a round of various quizzes. Every time she walks into a room for a quiz she is grabbed by one of the teams for her British and European knowledge as most passengers are American.
We attended "Afternoon Tea" in the dining room. A fair impression of a white glove service. The food arrived faster than we could eat it and we ended up with cheese sandwiches, cake, egg rolls and scone/jam/cream on our plates at the same time. With bursting bellies we made our excuses and left before the next round of food arrived.
We strolled along to the photo gallery and looked at the pictures taken during the captains party. Most we discarded but we bought a few to take home.
After dinner we sat in one of the many bars and listened to a medly of ABBA songs before retiring for the night.

Wednesday 8th January 2014
Island Princess off Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
We were woken at half six by the sound of one of the tenders being lowered. We had arrived in Cabo San Lucas. As we were awake we got up and watched the sun rise before showering and then walking upstairs for breakfast.
As we were ready we got our tender tickets and took the short boat trip to the harbour. Running the gauntlet of all the touts trying to get us to go fishing/whale watching etc. on thier boat we wandered around the flea market. Having coffee on the harbour front was relaxing then we walked back to the pier to meet our tour group. After a half hour bus ride we arrived at the ranch.
Most of the group were horse riding but ten of us were 4x4ing. We were issued with helmets, goggles and bandanas to protect us from the dust. Strapping into our Rhinos we were off.
Dodging through the cacti and scrub bushes after twenty minutes we arrived at a lookout and stopped for a few photos and a drink of water. After a short break we drove off again and dropped down on to the beach. driving through the sand we stopped again by some rocks and watched the waves. Too dangerous to swim here as it's called the "Divorce Beach" as it's a good place to get rid of an unwanted spouse.
Returning to the ranch for a quesda (taco ish with cheese and salsa). Then back on to the bus to return to the harbour. At the pier we were greeted with ice cold water and cool wet face cloths. Boarding the tenders we returned to the ship for a well earned rest and dinner. As we sailed from Cabo San Lucas we sat on our balcony and watched the port dissapear astern. Shortly after we were pleased to see a whale broaching. After a fantastic day and a beautiful sun set at sea, it was time for bed.

Thursday 9th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
Back at sea for a relaxing day. Exploring the ship, we are still finding parts of the ship that we didn't know were there or hadn't visited. We watched a fruit carving demonstration in the morning and joined in a few activities.
In the afternoon we sat on our balcony watching the coast pass by and looking for wildlife. Our patience was rewarded with five turtles, a shoal of flying fish and a pod of dolphins. We chatted with our neighbours on their balcony while we watched. Then it was time for dinner, the meals come thick and fast whilst cruising.
After dinner we relaxed before bed, remembering to move our clocks forward another hour for the morning.

Friday 10th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
Second day at sea. After a lazy start we climbed the four decks for breakfast. After eating we joined in the activities going on all over the ship.
After lunch we sat on the Lido deck, having found a patch of shade and watched "Mama Mia" on the giant screen that is just in front of the funnel. We returned to our cabin to cool down in air conditioned comfort having accidentally passed the cafe and picked up afternoon cakes and coffee.
Later we took our formal clothes to the laundry to touch them up with an iron. Then it was time for a formal dinner, so we cleaned ourselves up and washed the salt spray out of our hair before getting into our eveningwear and strolling through the ship to the dining room.

Saturday 11th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
Last relaxing day at sea for two days. So we had an easy day, at the photogrophers we selected some photos taken during the formal dinner. One of the new photogrophers was in trouble as he had cut off the tops of peoples heads and no-one is going to buy a photo with bits of them missing.
In the afternoon we went to the "World Trivia Quiz" and because it wasn't about America we did better than most teams. We would have won but we allowed our American team mates to answer four questions and they got them all wrong.
Later Jackie went to a "2013 Year Review" quiz and didn't do so well as it was all about the USA. However she still managed to win a bottle of champagne so we put that on ice for the Panama Canal transit in three days time.
In the evening we went to see a comic pianist. All the other passengers we spoke to were raving about how good he was. Well it was probably the worst act we have seen, even counting the begining stages of "Britians Got Talent". He was a good pianist but couldn't sing and he spent most of the time encoraging the audience to clap in time with the music.
Grabbing a late night snack we retired to our room for a good nights sleep.

Sunday 12th January 2014
Island Princess off San Jean de Sur, Nicaragua.
Another early start. Having had breakfast we waited in the theatre for our trip on the ships tenders to shore. The sea was a little choppy and threre was a strong breeze. Sitting outside on the top of the tender we were a little wind blown and salt sprayed by the time we got to the jetty.
Getting off of the tender at the jetty we were photographed and shown to our coach. Driving out of the harbour we soon stopped to see some howler monkeys in a tree near the road. The advise was to stay well back as the males spray if you get too close.
Back on our way, we drove up to the top of Masaya Volcano. The steam from the crater hid a lot of the details but it was a spectacular view anyway.
We descended to a resteraunt for lunch. The choice was "Rice and Beans" or "Beans and Rice", although it turned out there was also salad and fish, beef or chicken.
Heading back towards the ship we stopped in Granada (Where the telly's come from if you are old enough). Walking through town we saw the cathederal and park before visiting a museum.
Back at the ship we joined in a 70's Music trivia game. The host cheated shamelessly to ensure a tie between the two teams. If we got a question right there were no points for it, however if our opponents were right they scored twenty or thirty points. We found it funny as the more competitive people got very cross.
Then dinner and bed as tomorrow is another busy day.

Monday 13th January 2014
Island Princess alongside Puntaranus, Costa Rica.
Today we got a small lay-in as we are tied up alongside so do not have to use tenders to get off the ship. So after a nice breakfast we were on the jetty at eight o'clock for todays tour. Loading up we had a three hour drive up hill to the top of the Poas Volcano. Today the viewing was clearer and we could see down into the crater and the lake at the bottom. With steam coming out of a fumerol beside the lake and blue skies we got some beautiful photos. Then when the wind shifted everyone started coughing as the sulphurous fumes were now blowing towards us. With tickling throats we walked back down to the bus. Then like yesterday it was lunch time.
We wondered what was on the menu for today. We needen't have bothered it was "Rice and Beans" again although the strawberry smoothie was excellent.
After lunch a short trip brought us to the "Coffee Bean Ox Cart" factory. They make and decorate wooden ox carts to use in the coffee plantations as the land is too steep for mechanised equipment.
Then it was time for the long drive back to the ship. Stopping on the way at a steel church. Three previous churches had fallen down in earthquakes so the locals had built an earthquake proof church completle out of steel except for the windows.
Back on board we had five different sausages and sauerkraut for dinner as it was "Octoberfest" night in the canteen. We then grabbed a couple of loungers on the Lido Deck for "Movies Under The Stars". The deck stewards gave us blankets and we watched "Oblivion" starring Tom Cruise on the big screen with the full moon shining down. Then exhausted we returned to our suite for bed, remembering to advance our clocks by one hour once again.

Tuesday 14th January 2014
Island Princess in the Pacific Ocean.
Dragging ourselves out of bed we made it to breakfast by nine o'clock. We checked out the photos that had been taken on the last two days and then sat on the Promenade Deck sipping coffee before walking around the ship chatting and taking photographs.
After the now normal sea day quizes and lectures we had a relaxing evening and early night.

Wednesday 15th January 2014
Island Princess in the Panama Canal.
We woke at half five and looked out to see a lot of ships. Getting dressed we sat out on our balcony watching the ships as we passed them. Heading in towards the canal and the first lock, breakfast arrived and was set up on the table on the balcony. Opening the champagne that Jackie won the other day we enjoyed our champagne breakfast as we were guided into the first lock.
We had an interesting day watching the ship negotiate the canals six locks, lake and various cuttings.
Passing through the two Miraflores locks and the Pedro Miguel lock we passed under The Bridge of The Americas and along the Culebra Cut. Having climbed 26 metres we arrived in Gatun Lake and sailed across between the islands and anchored ships.
We lined up for the west lock set and then waited. One of the lock gates wouldn't close so the canal engineers had to persuade it. Eventually after an hour of adjustment it closed and we were guided in by the canal mules (electric rail locamotives that run along the wall of the locks).
Then we passed through the three chambers until we arrived at sea level on the Carabbean side. Having done nothing but watch we were exhausted and had a shower before dinner and an early night.

Thursday 16th January 2014
Island Princess in Cartagena, Columbia.
Arriving in Cartagena we docked in the container port and the bow of our ship was only about ten feet from a stack of containers. Boarding our bus we left the commercial port and entered the old town and stopped at the Citadel. The information about the tour said there was a steep ramp....With the temperature and humidity it was a very steep ramp.
Entering the tunnels under the citadel we were in very low light and confined space. The humidity was climbing as twenty of us stood to listen to the tour guide. Staggering out banging our heads on the low ceiling and tripping over the uneven floor we returned to the bus.
Back on the bus we went to a shopping area for twenty minutes. Then on again to the Naval Museum. Here we had a demonstration of local dance and music before a walking tour through the old town.
The bus then took us to another shop but we broke away from the group and had twenty minutes on our own to explore the city wall where "Romancing The Stone" was filmed.
Returning to the ship we were met as usual with ice cold face cloths and chilled water. Back on board we each got a plate of food from the BBQ on the Lido Deck and took it back to our suite.
Showered and fed we relaxed in our cabin as the ship sailed. Italian night in the resteraunt was nice but then it was time for bed and to advance our clocks an hour again.

Friday 17th January 2014
Island Princess in Orangestad, Aruba.
We arrived in Aruba at one o'clock in the afternoon so had a lazy morning before brunch. Then it was down to the jetty for our tour for today. We were on a 4x4 tour and took a bus to the depot where we filled in the usual disclaimers.
Then it was all aboard the Defender 130's. They were quite comfortable with three rows of bench seating in the back. A roll cage held an awning over us to keep the sun off.
We got the back row of seats and strapped in. Then we were off 5 Landies all painted yellow and black tiger strips. We drove through town with all the drivers hooting thier horns and the locals waving at us.
The other tour groups in thier coaches looked jealous as we roared past. We stopped at a view point and climbed the rock to see the sights.
Next was "Baby Natural Bridge", the large natural bridge had collapsed about five years ago. Then it was off road time and we screamed along the coast to the lighthouse. As we were at the back we got thrown about quite a lot.
Jackie had loosened her seat belt when we got out and had forgotten to re-tighten it when we got back in. The first large bump saw her flying from one side of the Landie to the other and landing on Martins lap. What a laugh.
After the lighthouse we drove to a beach for a swim before returning to the ship via the shops.
We just had time for a dip in the pool before showering and changing for dinner. After dinner we sat in the "Crooners Bar" and listened to a piano player singing until ten o'clock. This was when the "Balloon Drop Party" started with the ships band playing in the central Atrium.
We had free champagne and a hand full of streamers to throw. Then came the balloon drop and they released all the balloons from the net and it sounded like fire crackers as they were all popped in about five minutes. Once the party was over it was bed time.

Saturday 18th January 2014
Island Princess in the Carabbean Sea.
A sea day, no reason to get up early except for the room service breakfast we had ordered for half seven. Having woken to let the steward in we sat and ate breakie before spending time on craftwork. We have two competitions tomorrow, "Egg Drop" and "Scrapheap Challenge Boat Building".
The boat we have made out of empty water bottles, coat hangers and a cardboard box. The "Egg Drop" is a Pringles tube, a couple of fans, some bubble wrap and other bits and pieces.
The afternoon was taken with quizzing and lectures. We watched the song and dance show before getting cleaned up for dinner (Formal). We enjoyed our meal once the waiting staff found Jackies wine. The people we were dining with ordered two starters, two soups, two mains and two sweets EACH!
Back in our room our steward "Jon" had turned down our bed and left the usual two sweets on the pillow. Then we changed our watches again, setting them back an hour this time. Only one more time change to go.

Sunday 19th January 2014
Island Princess in the Caribbean Sea.
Last sea day today. After breakfast the usual lectures and quizzes in the morning. Later we had two competitions to attend.
First was the "Scrapheap Callenge Boat Building" competition. We took our boat up to the Lido deck ond nearly lost it over the side the wind was so strong. Placing it on a sun lounger and weighing it down with a towel we waited for the cruise staff and other contestants to turn up. The staff arrived but no other contestants appeared so we tested our boat by loading it with six cans of lemonade.
After a countdown Martin released the boat and it flew across the pool like a jet boat as the wind was so strong. It hit the far side and nearly capsized but as we succeded we won first prize. With a round of applause we returned to our suite with our boat and winnings.
After a healthy lunch it was time for the second challenge, the "Egg Drop". Taking our device to the Atrium and waited again. The staff arrived and this time there was another contestant. At least it made it a contest.
Taking our eggs now loaded into our devices to the top floor we began the contest. The other team went first and hurled their box down the three floors and it hit the stair handrail at the bottom.....Upon checking thier egg was intact. Our turn Martin launched our egg into space and with spinning fans it plumeted to the ground with a loud bang. The coke can crumple zone on the base was crushed but the egg survived so both teams were declared winners and got prizes including a bottle of champagne.
Returning to our room we packed our cases and placing them outside our door we went for dinner. Sharing a table with six other people we shared our champagne with the table. After a leasurely dinner and a parade of Baked Alaskas carried around the dining room by the chefs we retired for our last night on board.

Monday 20th January 2014
Island Princess in the Caribbean Sea.
Arriving in Fort Lauderdale early in the morning. We had an early breakfast before leaving our mini-suite for the last time. We waited in a lounge until our group were called for by US Customs.
Booking off the ship with our cruise cards for the last time we walked down the gangway and found our suitcases. Passing through immigration we found a taxi and were dropped off at the car rental company.
The rental salesperson offered us an upgrade for only $60. We declined and he made six more offers with the price dropping each time. Having refused them all he went to get the car. He returned after ten minutes with a larger car than we had booked. "I have given you the upgrade for free." he said. Obviously they didn't have the car we had booked and had no choice but to upgrade us and hoped to con us into paying for it.
Driving into Miami we found our motel and relaxed for the afternoon, re-packing our cases for the homeward trip. We had dinner in Applebee's, a sports bar/resteraunt and returned to our hotel for the night.

Tuesday 21st January 2014
Miami FL USA.
Taking breakfast back to our room we left our hotel at ten o'clock and drove out to Miami Beach for a sightseeing session. the road was blocked by a road traffic accident so we parked and took a walk down the boardwalk. As we couldn't find a coffee shop we drove further to Key Biscayne. After coffee, lunch and a walk on the beach we drove to Miami International Airport and returned the hire car.
The rental at MIA has been improved since our last visit and instead of a shuttle bus we took the monorail to the terminal. Checking in we got through security and grabbed a last minute shopping oppertunity.
Our flight was full as 250 flights through New York had been cancelled due to snow.

Tuesday 22nd January 2014
On Board an American Airways Flight Over The Atlantic Ocean.
Arriving at Heathrow we caught our pre-booked taxi and finally arrived home having circum-navigated the world in 46 days.
